Concealed Weapons
The mention of someone carrying a concealed weapon send shivers down some folks’ spines. They equate that with criminal activity and feel that no one should be allowed to participate in that activity. Only criminals carry concealed according to the uninformed. That’s what happens when you get your information from the 6:00 news which is very biased against legal gun ownership. OK so what are the facts?
First of all criminals don’t obey any laws that’s why they are criminals. A law against concealed weapons doesn’t faze them in the least. There are some sort of laws in 48 states that allow concealed carry. Some are good while others are way too restrictive and only allow people with connections to obtain a permit. Where there is a county sheriff who has the authority to issue them corruption might abound. Several states have such a system and it should be done away with. Many states have a shall issue permit system which generally works fairly well. You go through a class and if you have a clean record the state is obligated to issue you a permit. While it is a step in the right direction there needs to be some improvements. There is a patchwork of laws where you can carry in one state but not in another. These laws are always changing and if you travel you would be well advised to check on updated info. Some states honor permits from other states and some don’t. Isn’t it ridicules that crossing a state line might turn you into a criminal even if unintentional? There is a trend that some states are honoring more permits from other states and that is good as far as it goes.
When the shall issue system came in about 20 years ago the gun banners had dire predictions of what would happen. They predicted that the streets would run red with victims’ blood. Every time there would be a fender bender the drivers would get out and shoot at each other. Crime would skyrocket according to the doomsayers. Well an interesting thing happened. Crime went down in every state that adopted these laws. Hmmm! You say how is that possible? Don’t guns cause crime? Like all aspects of the gun banners arguments that one is also ridicules and not based on facts. Guns can’t cause crime but bad folks can. Each time a state instituted shall issue laws the gun banners came out against it stating their lame arguments. I guess they never learn. Remember one definition of insanity is trying the same thing over and over and expecting different results. That statement that the police have something to fear from permit holders if stopped for a traffic violation is utter absurdity. It boggles the mind that such nonsense would come out of a supposedly intelligent person’s mouth. Why would a law abiding citizen shoot at a cop who pulled them over for a traffic violation. A law abiding citizen is a law abiding citizen whether or not they are carrying. When a government entity makes it hard or impossible for the law abiding to carry they are telling you one thing. We don’t trust you with a weapon in spite of the fact that you haven’t committed any crimes. That, my friends is the bottom line! Do not doubt that!
Ok so what is the ideal solution to the problem? Alaska and Vermont have the correct solution. Any law abiding citizen can carry without a permit. Horrors! You say. Doesn’t the crime get worse? Of course not! If all 50 states had similar laws we would have a safer society. After all thugs don’t like to get shot any more then the rest of us. Studies have shown that felons are more afraid of armed citizens then the cops. Hmmm! How about training? Everyone should know the laws and when and when not to shoot. There is nothing wrong with a requirement that you have to attend a class and upon completion get a card indicating same and that should be the only requirement needed. You should be able to carry in any of the 50 states with fear of harassment from any authority. After all the bad guys do so why not level the playing field!
