You came here looking for answers on surviving in state prison, federal prison, jail or county corrections. Most of you are male and are worried about the age old question about prison rape – put that on the back burner for now, I’ll explain it in detail in a moment. Let’s first get some of the other issues out of the way. They will all fall in line and are structured to build up to answer the “burning question”.

So, to help you along on how you can survive in prison or jail, lets get started. Here are a few of the biggest tips on surviving your incarceration, mentally and physically:

• The number one rule of all: SHUT UP! Speak to no one of your alleged crime except for your HIRED attorney. If you have been arrested observe your rights to an attorney and to only be questioned when one is present. Under no circumstances should you divulge any information to the police officer asking you guilt seeking questions.

  I know, he said that if you just confess everything will be easier on you. Not the case – you are simply making it easier for him and the prosecuting attorney. Listen, once he has your “confession” he simply hands it off to the prosecutor. So, while your lawyer is driving to get to you he is surely sending you telepathic messages to shut up. I hope for your sake you got them.

  You of course should also not tell other prisoners about your crime. Besides, someone will eventually get into your jacket and see your PSI report. Regardless – take it to the grave. Absolve your sins at church or find some other catalyst other than a fellow prisoner. Nothing is worse than a rat. Especially when that rat is your cellie and will divulge information to the authorities in hopes of a lighter sentence.

• No matter what, you should never back down from a fight. I was never a fighter – real skinny and weighed in at 170 pounds wet. But when someone attempted to push me I pushed back. Whether its someone off their meds, someone wishing to go in the SHU for a little peace and quiet or you actually get chin checked, take some action. If you happen to get hit back – so be it.

  This altercation will last roughly 30 seconds and will feel like the longest fight on the planet, but don’t worry, the guards will be there in seconds to break it up. Now, when you see the guards coming simply do as they say.

You have just done two important things:

1. You have shown others you will not back down from an altercation.
2. You have shown the guards that you are complacent and will do as instructed.

As a recent venture, I’ve had the opportunity to talk to people who have had experiences of being incarcerated. I personally have never had time behind bars and have no close acquaintances who’ve been through the experience, either. As such, my only exposure to the jail experience is from what I’ve seen from TV and movies. I never really knew what the actual experience was like.

My phone interviews were educational in several ways. For one, as background research, I found out that one out of 142 Americans (slightly outdated data – likely a higher percentage now) is currently in jail. It’s over 2 million people right now. I also learned things about some jail terminology and concepts I had not previously grasped. For example, in some counties, you will only serve one half of your sentenced time as a result of time off for good behavior. I learned about work release programs that give relatively privileged inmates a level of freedom even when they’re not fully free.

I also learned about the dark side of jail. Now, as I mentioned, I’ve seen movies and TV that have shown me a lot of dirty things going on in jail, but I have a hard time believing them because, hey, it’s the movies. It turns out that a lot of the stuff about the gangs requiring payment for protection, watching out who you talk to, shiv making and so forth really does happen, at least in the big jails. It was pretty scary to find out the amount of reality in the fiction I’d seen.

After my interaction with these ex-inmates, I was given a new level of respect for the freedoms I take for granted. In a lot of ways, hearing about how bad things are there opened my eyes to how good I have it. I don’t know if I’d necessarily recommend it as a pastime for people who want to see the positive in their lives, but I do think that if you know someone who’s been to jail, talking to them can provide a very enlightening look into just how good your life really is.

Many collect links to community and legal agency pages the difference? Some sites get big and want to charge an access or membership fee for letting you use them even when they are incomplete. Some are only links to free sites. If you have the time and inclination, which most folks don’t seem to, here are a few easy tips to get what you want in the way of personal records or identifying and locating a person easier and perhaps, more efficiently.

For a free people search: Try court record or police reports that state, counties and localities will post on their websites. More and more government agencies don’t have a problem scanning an arrest report, which might include a drivers license number or other sensitive data It’s AMAZING how many times a social security number is written on an official document in a margin or notation, legal documents are considered to be public information. Those include addresses, aliases and who knows what else, it depends on the form they use and the laws concerning the release of files, but most of the time, EVERYTHING is current. Another source like that would be land registries and deeds on file at the local courthouse, keep in mind, there are people involved, they might be lazy or not pay attention to what details are on it.

For an Inmate search: This is easy, jails or sheriff’s departments will post arrest warrants or population lists right on their sites. Those that don’t, will usually tell you almost anything over the phone or by email. To find those pages, search your favorite search engine with a simple phrase in quotes like “Jefferson County Jail” for prison or county jail inmate search in the state you want. Usually you won’t get anything more than what the offender is locked up or wanted for, but you can check dates to determine if they are still in a certain area.

One last tip for now: If you want to find people free, TRY! It’s understandable that you get frustrated, disappointed or feel like giving up. Not everyone can be found the ways I described, but if it is a reliable source and often is the same information you would pay other companies for, if it’s worth a little time and effort to save some money, give it a shot. It’s safe to say that more than half of the nation has something about them online, somewhere.

The moral of this article is this: Don’t pay anyone for public records right away if you have the time to try it yourself first. YES, it is frustrating. We do it daily and it can be a pain, but when you are successful, it’s satisfying and the reward is reconnecting with loved ones or getting help for your situation.

California does not make specific information available to the public except as required by Megan's Law,and does not maintain a searchable database but if you need to locate an inmate within the California Department of Corrections, please call (916) 445-6713, which is available 24 hours a day. You must have either the inmate's CDC number, or the inmate's full name and date of birth to receive information. The Inmate Locator/ID Warrants will provide an inmate's location, mailing addresses and relevant phone numbers. The Inmate Locator/ID Warrants will not provide any future release date information. Please note that for new or transferring inmates it can take up to seven business days to update location information.

What separates Salinas Valley State Prison from the rest of the other California State Prisons is the severe overcrowding. Inmates are stacked in dorm like structures 3 bunks high. They live all day and night with many angry men that never look out for your best interests. This living situation is a danger to themselves as well as the Correctional Officers or CO’s. Some prisoners argue that an 8 by 7 foot concrete cell would be a lot more comfortable than living in Cell Block C which is a makeshift dorm. 120 inmates all jammed on top of one another with no bars, no cells, just a big open space with a lot of upset convicts looking for an excuse to employ violence.

Most prisoners entering the Salinas Valley State Prison Cell Block C Dorm look for people of their color where they are safer. Each race owns their own area of the dorm. Take a shortcut and you could get beaten to a pulp by rival gangs. If you use the wrong toilet, you could get stabbed. Since inmates are not in cells they have no protection and no place to hide when something goes down. There’s no commissary, little recreation and a lot of empty time for a lot of edgy men. The term for this is called warehousing.

Gangs control most of the inmates at Salinas Valley State Prison. The largest gang at Salinas are the Southern Mexicans and their attacks aren’t arbitrary. They are currently at war with the White Prison Gangs and have traded several vicious attacks. In this environment you have to stand by your own, and you have to fight to protect them even if you get badly injured or get time added to your original sentence. Those are the rules of the game in prison, you have to stick by and defend your own race. There was an incident where 3 White People were jumped by 20 Southern Mexicans and beaten unconscious with Batteries, Socks and Shanks. A Shank is a common type of homemade knives made in prison.

70 Percent of criminals who enter Salinas Valley State Prison were in gangs before they came to prison. Correctional Officers currently battle over 200 attacks each year on C-Yard which is the gangs main battleground. In fact at one time this year was the most violent yard in the State of California. There are four yards at Salinas Prison but Yard C is the most violent yard by far. From Level 4 Generals to Level 3 Foot Soldiers who carry out orders from the Shot Callers. The main gangs in Salinas Valley State Prison are the Northern Mexicans, Southern Mexicans, the White Gangs, the African American Gangs and the “others”, which includes Pacific Islanders and Asians.

San Quentin Prison which is located in San Quentin, California currently houses some of the most Violent Inmates in the State of California. It’s one of Americas most notorious prisons. It’s famous for it’s Death Row but it’s main purpose is to house a transient population of over 3,000 Murderers, Sexual Predators, and Small Time criminals. San Quentin is a world within a world. An institution with it’s own brutal code of honor. Certain violent inmates who attacked other inmates or guards that are segregated from the rest of the population.

It’s a fact that San Quentin Prison Guards have to wear Flak Jackets since other inmates might try to stab them as they walk down the halls. The White Gangs call themselves either Woods or Aryan Brotherhood. Then the Nortenos and the African American gangs all claim their own space on the prison yard. There are day to day politics in prison that every prison must abide by or deal with the consequences. Sometimes new people who weren’t in street gangs when they went to prison have trouble dealing with the shot callers. Methamphetamines is the most common drug among the White inmates.

There are stabbings and prison deaths over the years, as well as some suicides that have taken place in San Quentin Prison. It appears that racial segregation is a big thing in the Big House, and violators can get beaten up badly or even stabbed for helping someone in another race. When you arrive at prison, you’re assigned a Shot Caller for your county. This is the person who controls what goes on in the prison yard. Sometimes prisoners at San Quentin Prison are even asked by shot callers to stab another person, in some cases even a friend they may have hung out with on the outside. And if they refuse, they can get the bad end of the shank themselves.

I feel a lot of people don’t write about what it’s really like in San Quentin Prison or any other prison for that matter. They get fed 3 meals per day and warehoused and for the most part society chooses to forget they even exist. I feel that if prisons like San Quentin would offer real in demand skills to people who want to learn a solid trade to practice when they get out, they should be able to do this.

Or they’ll never get a decent paying job to keep their morale up, they’ll screw up and land back on violation. I didn’t mention that most of the people going into intake because they violated have a big smile on their face, they’re where they want to be since now they don’t have to hustle to get fed. I know it will never happen anytime soon, but it would be nice if they’d educate these Convicts so they don’t keep ending up in San Quentin Prison’s West Block, known as the revolving door.

Being locked up in prison is no fairy tale and you know it. A lot can take place in the joint and the worst part is you cannot do anything about it. Prison is about the second worst place that you can imagine, falling behind hell itself. Luckily, surviving prison is attainable. How do you do this? Of course, avoid the use of illegal drugs. The consequences of using drugs are bad and it will not do you any good creating such a habit in jail.

How much money does an inmate make while in a State Prison?

I know inmates make a little bit of money while in a state prison. They do small jobs for very little income. I know that very little income is still better than no income.
I'm owed thousands in back child support, and never received anything. My daughters father will finally be going to a State prison for numerous felonys, and I was just wondering how much money I can expect to make while he's in there. Even $10 per month is better than nothing at all.

Do you want to find a female inmate pen pal? There are a couple of simple methods available to you. I think it is important for everyone to learn the second approach. Contacting prisoners can be dangerous, so learn the risk-free approach.

You can find addresses over the internet. If you Google terms like “prisoner” and “inmate” pen pals, you will find dozens of relevant sites. Each site usually categorizes inmates by gender and age. Each prisoner tends to get a page which includes their photograph (in most cases), a short biography, and contact details. The problem with this approach is you must contact them via snail mail. In other words, you write a conventional letter, and email it directly to the appropriate prison. This, of course, means your postman will deliver letters to you marked with that prison’s details and you will be giving out your address to someone in prison. Do you really want to let an inmate, a total stranger, know where you live? Do you want the people she knows to know where you live? I thought not.

There is a better approach. This method is risk-free.

The second approach involves contacting female inmates anonymously over the internet. This way you can develop a friendship before releasing personal details about yourself.

Thousands of new inmates a month will ask their friends in the outside world to put up their information for free on free dating communities. These incarcerated women are desperate for love, friendship, and affection. They hope to meet men who will give them what they need. Friends of incarcerated women will post their details, including photographs, on the major dating sites. When men contact them, via email or instant messenger, the friends will then pass on all communications to their inmate friends in prison.

All you have to do to find these women is join a major dating community. You only need a free account to find these women. Get yourself an account and go to the search page. You will see a field, usually, where you can enter a keyword. Type in something like “prisoner” or “inmate”, then enter in your other criteria, such as location and age. You will be given a list of female inmates. This is how you find your female inmate pen pal without giving out any information about yourself.
