California does not make specific information available to the public except as required by Megan's Law,and does not maintain a searchable database but if you need to locate an inmate within the California Department of Corrections, please call (916) 445-6713, which is available 24 hours a day. You must have either the inmate's CDC number, or the inmate's full name and date of birth to receive information. The Inmate Locator/ID Warrants will provide an inmate's location, mailing addresses and relevant phone numbers. The Inmate Locator/ID Warrants will not provide any future release date information. Please note that for new or transferring inmates it can take up to seven business days to update location information.

or try www.vinelink.com but I find them next to useless… I tested the system by entering the information I know to be current for four inmates in various facilities, only one hit and that person is still awaiting trial…I'm not impressed.

What separates Salinas Valley State Prison from the rest of the other California State Prisons is the severe overcrowding. Inmates are stacked in dorm like structures 3 bunks high. They live all day and night with many angry men that never look out for your best interests. This living situation is a danger to themselves as well as the Correctional Officers or CO’s. Some prisoners argue that an 8 by 7 foot concrete cell would be a lot more comfortable than living in Cell Block C which is a makeshift dorm. 120 inmates all jammed on top of one another with no bars, no cells, just a big open space with a lot of upset convicts looking for an excuse to employ violence.

Most prisoners entering the Salinas Valley State Prison Cell Block C Dorm look for people of their color where they are safer. Each race owns their own area of the dorm. Take a shortcut and you could get beaten to a pulp by rival gangs. If you use the wrong toilet, you could get stabbed. Since inmates are not in cells they have no protection and no place to hide when something goes down. There’s no commissary, little recreation and a lot of empty time for a lot of edgy men. The term for this is called warehousing.

Gangs control most of the inmates at Salinas Valley State Prison. The largest gang at Salinas are the Southern Mexicans and their attacks aren’t arbitrary. They are currently at war with the White Prison Gangs and have traded several vicious attacks. In this environment you have to stand by your own, and you have to fight to protect them even if you get badly injured or get time added to your original sentence. Those are the rules of the game in prison, you have to stick by and defend your own race. There was an incident where 3 White People were jumped by 20 Southern Mexicans and beaten unconscious with Batteries, Socks and Shanks. A Shank is a common type of homemade knives made in prison.

70 Percent of criminals who enter Salinas Valley State Prison were in gangs before they came to prison. Correctional Officers currently battle over 200 attacks each year on C-Yard which is the gangs main battleground. In fact at one time this year was the most violent yard in the State of California. There are four yards at Salinas Prison but Yard C is the most violent yard by far. From Level 4 Generals to Level 3 Foot Soldiers who carry out orders from the Shot Callers. The main gangs in Salinas Valley State Prison are the Northern Mexicans, Southern Mexicans, the White Gangs, the African American Gangs and the “others”, which includes Pacific Islanders and Asians.
